The airport as a place of work
The land around Schiphol is one of the country's major business areas, and very little of it looks like a postcard. Offices, logistics buildings and training centres fill Schiphol-Rijk and Schiphol-Oost; Hoofddorp's business parks spread outward from its station; the conference floors of the terminal-side hotels are booked by companies that fly people in for a single day. The visitors who come for those meetings stay close because the city is a train ride away and the morning flight is not. Their evenings have a recognisable shape: a group dinner that is over by 21:00, a hotel bar that empties quickly, and a quiet room with several hours to spare. That is the evening we are most often asked to fill.
