The therapists who work the Schiphol hotels

The cards tell you a name, the languages, the photographs. What they cannot tell you is which of these women to write to at four in the morning, which is unfortunately the only question that matters at four in the morning.

Start with the language

Not for novelty. Because at the end of a fourteen-hour day conducted in your second language, the third one is where the tiredness shows. Every page lists what she speaks, and you are welcome to write to us in whatever language the day actually happened in rather than translating yourself into English somewhere over the North Sea. The women whose pages carry your language are not a shortlist of the best ones; they are a shortlist of the people you will not have to work to be understood by. On an ordinary evening that is a small convenience. On a long night it is most of the booking.

Three in the morning is its own skill

Some therapists are at their best at nine in the evening, in a room where the guest has had a good day and wants it to go on a while. A smaller number are genuinely good at three. That is temperament rather than technique: walking into a room where someone is wrung out, slightly unmoored and not entirely sure which country this is, and not needing conversation to fill the space. We know which of them those are, and no photograph has ever shown it. Ask, and we will say.

Forty-five women, twenty-four nationalities between them, ages twenty-one to thirty. Every one of them was met in person before she started, and the photographs on this site were taken by us rather than sent in. That last detail is a small thing in your own city and a much larger one in a place you landed in three hours ago with nobody to ask: the woman at the door is the woman on the page.
