Every year at the end of April, Amsterdam turns orange. King's Day brings visitors from all over Europe and further, and a large share of them arrive through Schiphol in the two days before. Flying into Schiphol for King's Day is a different experience from an ordinary arrival: longer queues, fuller trains, hotel rates at their highest and a city that is loud until late. If a session in your room is part of the plan for the trip, a little extra care goes a long way.
Flying into Schiphol for King's Day: what is different
The first difference is the airport itself. Arrivals on the day before King's Day are among the busiest of the spring, and the border queues for passengers from outside the Schengen area can be long in the afternoon. Trains into the city run often but are crowded, and taxis from the rank can have a wait. Many visitors who could not find or afford a room in the centre stay near the airport instead, in the hotels around the terminal or at Schiphol-Rijk, and travel in and out for the celebrations. That shifts more bookings than usual to the airport side.
The second difference is on our side. King's Day is one of the peak dates the house names, together with ADE, Pride, the Christmas and New Year run and the large conference weeks. On a peak date every booking is confirmed with a deposit of half of its price, wherever the room is and whoever the client is. A one-hour session for one guest with one therapist is EUR 180, so EUR 90 goes ahead. For ninety minutes, EUR 270, it is EUR 135.
Book before you board
Therapists' evenings fill quickly around the holiday, especially the evening before, when many visitors arrive, and the evening of the day itself, when people come back to their rooms tired and happy. A request sent a week or more before the trip gives the widest choice. Any booking made more than twenty-four hours ahead is confirmed with a deposit in any case, so the peak date rule changes little for those who plan early. What it changes is the last minute request: on King's Day, a same-day message may find the evening already full.
When you write, give the date, the hotel or area, the start, the length and, if you have one, a therapist from the profiles. Timing the session on a party day
King's Day starts early and ends late. The streets fill from the morning, the flea markets open at dawn in some neighbourhoods, and the music goes on well into the evening. A session in the middle of that is hard to enjoy. The two times that work are the evening before, after you have landed and settled in, and the evening of the day itself, once you have had enough of the crowds and come back to shower. For the second, allow for the trains back to the airport hotels being full: set the start at least an hour later than you think you will be back.
Travellers who drink during the day should be honest with themselves about the evening. A session booked for 21:00 is not much use to a guest asleep at 20:30, and a booking missed because you did not wake up, with her already at the door, keeps the whole deposit as fee already earned. If in doubt, book the evening before instead, when you are rested and sober.
The morning after
Many visitors fly home on the day after King's Day, often feeling it. A late-morning session in an airport hotel room before an afternoon flight is a popular booking for exactly that reason. Keep it to an hour or ninety minutes, drink plenty of water, and leave generous time for the airport, which is busy again with everyone going home at once. Paying on a busy weekend
The deposit goes by card, Revolut, Wise or crypto once the office confirms; PayPal is not accepted. The balance is settled at the door in cash in any major currency, by card or in crypto. Cash machines in the city run low on the day, so if you plan to pay the balance in cash, withdraw it before you arrive or bring it with you. Nothing is added to the rates for the holiday: the ladder is the same as on any other date.
If your plans change
Flights around public holidays change more often than usual. If yours moves more than twenty-four hours before the booked start, the booking can move once to another date within fourteen days, and the deposit moves with it. A change asked for inside the last twenty-four hours, or a second change, is measured on the notice scale like a cancellation. The cancellation policy sets this out in full. On a peak date, when the therapist has turned away other requests for your evening, the reason for that rule is easy to see.
A short plan
Book a week ahead. Choose the evening before or the evening of the day, never the middle of it. Stay near the airport if the city is full, and allow extra time for the trains. Send the deposit when the office confirms, keep cash for the balance if you prefer to pay that way, and keep the phone on loud. All guests are twenty-one or over.
