Jet Lag

Jet lag is the mismatch between the body clock and local time after crossing time zones; for a traveller booking here it mainly decides which hour to choose.

Fly east from New York or west from Tokyo and your body lands in Amsterdam still set to the place you left. Sleep comes at the wrong time, appetite wanders, and 21:00 on the hotel clock may feel like mid-afternoon or like four in the morning. The effect is usually stronger after flying east, and it tends to fade by roughly a day for each hour of difference, though people vary widely.

What it changes about a booking

The house does not sell a jet-lag treatment. What jet lag changes is planning, and three practical points follow.

First, pick the hour by how you feel, not by local convention. Arriving from the Americas often leaves a traveller wide awake well after midnight; the house works around the clock, so a start at 01:30 is as ordinary to the office as one at 19:00. Someone arriving from Asia may be fading by early evening and is better served by an earlier start.

Second, write times in Amsterdam time. A tired mind converts badly, and a phone that has not yet updated makes it worse. The time zone entry deals with that.

Third, leave a buffer against sleep. Dozing off before the therapist arrives is the classic jet-lag failure. Set an alarm for a quarter of an hour before the earliest arrival time, keep the ringer loud, and if you suspect you will crash, choose a shorter rung rather than a long one.

Price and arrangement

Jet lag carries no surcharge and no special format. The ladder applies as always, from EUR 180 for an hour, and a room in the airport area is arranged ahead with half sent first. The page on jet lag near Schiphol goes further, and the journal note on jet lag east and west compares the two directions.
